Make money taking surveys and focus groups

Product manufacturers and retailers are always hungry for data. Because it is so expensive to bring a new product to market, manufacturers want as much information as possible about shoppers' tastes and habits to ensure the new product's success and a good return on their investment. For retailers, it's all about stocking the products that will sell for a profit, plus finding the very best places to spend their advertising dollars to reach potential shoppers.

Earlier, I've told you about how online marketers employ sneaky tactics to follow you around, like Google's invasive ads, and deliver you targeted ads. Ever notice that when you look up a product online, for days and weeks later you'll see Web ads for that very product all across the Internet? That's one way marketers gather information about your shopping habits. Unfortunately, when they put that little tracking cookie on your computer, you don't really get anything out of it, except maybe that cute sweater that finally comes down to the right price.

But as I wrote above, manufacturers and retailers are really hungry for data. So hungry, in fact, that they are willing to pay for insights into shoppers' opinions, tastes, habit and preferences. And if you are the one who is trying out that new product, watching the new commercial and offering your unique opinions, some of all that money marketers spend on research can go right in your pocket!

Yes, you can make legitimate money just by offering your opinions on products, taking surveys, or by becoming part of a clinical trial. The trick to getting on board that money train is knowing where to start.

First, you need to check if you are eligible to participate. Sign up for a free account and complete the eligibility survey. This survey will ask you specific questions about your age, gender, employment and so on. Note that workers in some professions may be disqualified for participating in research about products in their area of work. For instance, as a member of the media working in radio, I'm disqualified from most surveys. The idea is to try to get opinions from average citizens rather than folks with insider information about the industry being researched.

But note that just because you complete the quick screening questionnaire, it doesn't mean that you will be automatically be selected for participation. If you are picked, you will be contacted by one of FocusGroup.com's recruiters for more information.

Once the recruiter verifies and confirms your information, you should be all set and ready to go!

Now for the fun part ... getting paid! For in-person sessions, you will get a check or pre-paid Visa card after the survey is completed. However, telephone and online surveys may take up to eight weeks to process.
